Sporophagomyces chrysostomus is a species of fungus in the family Plectosphaerellaceae, order Hypocreales, class Sordariomycetes, phylum Ascomycota. It is typically found on decaying wood and other plant material. In East and Central Texas, Sporophagomyces chrysostomus has been isolated from various substrates, including oak and pine trees, with optimal growth observed at temperatures between 20-25°C. The fungus produces yellow to orange-yellow colonies with a woolly to felty texture, and its conidia are unicellular, hyaline, and ellipsoidal in shape.

Spore size 8.3 - 9.8 × 2.4 - 2.66 µm, length to width ratio Q = 3.3 - 3.9.The observations document the presence of the fungus Sporophagomyces chrysostomus on various substrates, including resupinate polypore mushrooms (Fulvifomes johnsonianus and Fuscoporia) and fallen trees, in Texas. The fungus was found in Sam Houston National Forest and Little Thicket Nature Sanctuary between 2020 and 2024. It appears as a web-like or velvety covering on the underside of the mushrooms or on tree cavities, often with trapped spores. Microscopic examination revealed hyphae, conidia, and tissues with Congo Red staining. Spore prints showed conidia in Lugol's solution. The observations suggest that Sporophagomyces chrysostomus is a parasitic fungus that targets polypore mushrooms, collecting their spores for nutrition. The consistent findings across different locations and years indicate a stable presence of this fungus in the region.
