Fomitiporia punctata is a fungal species that belongs to the family Hymenochaetaceae. It is a wood-decaying fungus that typically grows on dead or dying trees, particularly oak and elm. In East and Central Texas, Fomitiporia punctata has been found to fruit on a variety of hardwood tree species, often forming effused-reflexed to pileate basidiocarps with reddish-brown to grayish-brown caps and white to yellowish pores. The fungus is known to cause a brown rot type of decay, and its presence can be indicative of advanced decay in infected trees.

AI-generated summary of observations
The observations document the presence of Fomitiporia punctata, also known as elbowpatch crust fungus, in various locations across Texas. The fungus was found on different tree species, including live oaks, black locusts, and honey locusts, in both urban and natural areas. Observations were made over a period of two years, with the fungus appearing in various forms, from resupinate polypore mushrooms to crust-like growths. The observations also note the texture, pore surface, and spores of the fungus. The data suggests that Fomitiporia punctata is widespread in Texas, can grow on different tree species, and can be found in various environments. The observations provide valuable information on the distribution, morphology, and ecology of this fungal species. Overall, the observations contribute to a better understanding of Fomitiporia punctata and its role in ecosystems.
