Strobilomyces dryophilus is a species of bolete fungus that grows in association with trees, typically oak. In East and Central Texas, it fruits from May to October, often in sandy or clay soils under post oak, live oak, and other Quercus species. The cap is 3-8 cm wide, dry, and velvety, ranging in color from dark brown to nearly black, with a distinctive reticulate pattern of white or pale yellow veins. The pore surface is yellowish-brown to olive-brown, and the stalk is similarly colored, often with a reticulate pattern.

AI-generated summary of observations
The fungus Strobilomyces dryophilus was observed in East and Central Texas from 2018 to 2024. The observations were made in various locations, including Lick Creek Park, Lake Somerville Trailway, and Bastrop State Park. The mushroom was found growing under live oaks, small oaks, and near young pines. The observations included notes on the mushroom's appearance, texture, and spores. Many of the observations included photos of the mushroom from different angles, including cross-sections and underside views. Some observations also noted the presence of other mushrooms, such as Butyriboletus floridanus, growing nearby. The observations provide a detailed record of the fungus's characteristics and habits in its natural habitat. Overall, the observations suggest that Strobilomyces dryophilus is a common species in the region, with a wide range of habitats and associations with different tree species.
